Video shows Hubble Telescope’s chops

In a risky move, scientists pointed the orbiting Hubble Telescope toward a completely black patch in the sky devoid of any stars or galaxies. What the astronomers discovered was nothing less than astounding: a whole new group of thousands of galaxies, and a glimpse into the universe in its infancy. Check out this extraordinary video of the Ultra Deep Field:

Buzz Aldrin urges Mars exploration

,

The second man on the moon, Buzz Aldrin, has decried the current lack of boldness on the part of NASA.

The outspoken astronaut, not one to mince words, said, “As I approach my 80th birthday, I’m in no mood to keep my mouth shut any longer when I see NASA heading down the wrong path. And that’s exactly what I see today. The agency’s current Vision for Space Exploration will waste decades and hundreds of billions of dollars trying to reach the moon by 2020—a glorified rehash of what we did 40 years ago. Instead of a steppingstone to Mars, NASA’s current lunar plan is a detour.”

Buzz Aldrin feels heading back to the moon shouldn’t be NASA’s next goal, but heading to Mars.

President Barack Obama Celebrates Cinco de Mayo a day early

,

President Barack Obama intends to celebrate the traditional Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo on May 4. While in the East Room of the White House, Obama joked that he intended to celebrate the “Cautro de Mayo.” He is currently hosting Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan.

Unfortunately, Obama’s Spanish isn’t very good. First he said “Cinco de Cuatro,” and a second attempt at Spanish pronunciation failed as well. Fortunately for the Presidential joker, Obama still got a lot of laughs.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day. The holiday actually commemorates an important military victory against occupying French troops on May 5, 1862 in the state of Puebla. On this day, Mexicans honor the stunning triumph of an outnumbered and under-equipped Mexican army over an invading French force. The victory did not prevent the French from conquering Mexico and installing an emperor, but it did delay the occupation of Mexico City. The actual Mexican Independence Day falls on September 16.

Courtney Ross’s Ross School headlines Jonas Brothers

, ,

Newsflash: The Jonas Brothers preformed for charity at the Ross School, the charter school founded by Courtney Sale Ross in East Hampton New York. The event will benefit children who want to attend Courtney Ross’ school, which provides unique opportunities for students seeking a global education in an increasingly globalized world. The event was made possible through the efforts of the school’s sponsor: Courtney Sale Ross herself.

Sandwiched between gigs at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater and Madison Square Garden, the hugely popular Jonas Brothers jetted to East Hampton Saturday for a more intimate concert at the elite Ross School.

For $1,500 a ticket, screaming, sweating preteens were so close to the heartthrobs, they could — and did — grab at their skinny-jeaned legs. Others, perched atop gym bleachers near team banners, sang the lyrics to their favorite songs.

The midday concert was part of a star-filled summer series to raise funds for the private school, where tuition is up to $24,800 per year and more than 40 percent of its 600 students receive scholarships.

Proceeds from the show, attended by about 650 people, will go toward raising the $2 million needed to build up the school’s annual scholarship fund, said Diana Aceti, director of development and public relations.
