This video has been around for a long time, but it’s still making the rounds. The MGM Lion discusses the philosophy of death. It’s a surreal, darkly funny examination of what death is like. Yet the MGM Lion is strangely reassuring with a potentially grim subject. You may not agree with the lion’s assertion, but you have to admit it’s food for thought.
You MUST check out this wild website, which we found through Stumble Upon. Starship Dimensions has a series of amazing illustrations comparing the sizes of spaceships and aliens from a wide range of sci-fi television shows and movies. You can see how Serenity from Firefly stacks up sizewise against a Imperial Shuttle or AT-AT Walker, a Nebari Pod, a Drazi Sun Hawk, and even a Boeing 747! Starship Dimensions is aeronautical engineering at its coolest.
You may be already with the quote from Dr. J Robert Oppenheimer, the lead scientist in the creation of the atomic bomb. After witnessing the first successful nuclear explosion, Dr. Oppenheimer thought of the passage from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita: “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Via Video Sift, here is an actual video of Dr. Oppenheimer making that quote. It’s kinda creepy and amazing at the same time, and look fast as Dr. Oppenheimer wipes away a tear. It’s clear that Dr. Oppenheimer is aware of the implications of the awesome, horrible power that he helped unleash.
How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer’s deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too
The University of Utah has an awesome site that brings you along an incredible journey where you get smaller and smaller. Featured on the Genetic Science Learning Center site, the Cell Size and Scale site features a sliding navigation bar to act as your “shrinking ray”. First you begin with a coffee bean, a grain of rice, and a sesame seed drawn to scale. Then begin sliding the bar to the right, and be amazed. It’s the coolest shrinking device since Fantastic Voyage.
Humor site The Oatmeal is popular for its irreverent (and occasionally NSFW) illustrations of life’s little fun facts and absurdities. Seattle comic writer/artist Matt Inman has a special talent for putting a hilarious spin on sober scientific facts, as illustrated by the ultimate Apology for the Awesomeness of Cats, entitled “17 things worth knowing about your cat”. Did you know Isaac Newton invented the cat door? No kidding!
