Woman in China Grows Horn

,

buzzZhang Ruifang, a 101-year-old woman in China has developed a growth on her forehead that strongly resembles a horn similar to those found on goats. The horn is approximately 6cm on the left side of her forehead. While doctors appear to be stumped, there may be a simple explanation to the horn-like feature: a cutaneous horn. The horn is made of keratin and is sometimes found in elderly individuals who are exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.

Lava Lamp on Jupiter?

, ,

It’s a burning question that has puzzled mankind for centuries: Would a lava lamp function properly in the high gravity of Jupiter? Several engineers who apparently have way too much time on their hands built a homemade centrifuge to test the effects of Jupiter’s gravity upon the world’s premier hippie lamp. Here are the results. And let me tell you, nothing says “high technology” and “pure science” more than Irish jig music.

Happy Birthday, Pluto!

Today is Pluto’s 80th birthday! Perhaps the most beleaguered “sad sack” of the solar system, Pluto was recently (and ignominiously, IMHO) demoted to “dwarf planet” status, reducing the Sun’s planet horde from an affluent nine to a frugal eight. But Pluto is still a very significant celestial body, according to neat-o astronomy blog Starts with a Bang. Did you know that Pluto was the FIRST object discovered in the Kuiper Belt? What the devil is the Kuiper Belt, you ask? Read on…

Who Killed King Tut? Malaria

, ,

According to a just-published study, King Tutankhamen, the most famous pharaoh of ancient Egypt, was not a victim of a dastardly murder plot. Scientists have concluded that good ol’ King Tut (who died at the tender age of 19) was likely killed by malaria, accompanied with a degenerative bone disease. So much for this ancient whodunit.
