Another Harmful Side of Global Warming

Significant facts about global warming and initiatives on how to address this global threat have spread far and wide. However, this detrimental condition still lingers and continues to alarm us. We need to do more to propel earth initiatives.

An article from AFP titled “Floods Under Antarctic Ice Speed Glaciers Into Sea: Study” features a study conducted by scientists showing that enormous floods under Antarctica’s ice sheets hasten the flow of glaciers. The melting of these glaciers into the sea will result to rising sea levels and the real culprit that drives this alarming phenomenon is global warming. Each one should do his part in fighting climate change; or else we would be seeing more and more of its destruction.

PARIS (AFP) – Scientists unveiled Sunday the first direct evidence that massive floods deep below Antarctica’s ice cover are accelerating the flow of glaciers into the sea.

How quickly these huge bodies of ice slide off the Antarctic and Greenland land masses into the ocean help determine the speed at which sea levels rise.

The stakes are enormous: an increase measured in tens of centimetres (inches) could wreak havoc for hundreds of millions of people living in low-lying deltas and island nations around the world.

Researchers discovered only recently that inaccessible subglacial lakes in Antarctica periodically shed huge quantities of water.

Fight Global Warming By Planting Trees on Pet Earth

,

Cool little iPhone virtual game called Pet Earth and will donate a portion of it’s proceeds to planting trees.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, November 16, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ — GoPlanit.com, the social travel planning tool that launched at this year’s TechCrunch 50 Conference, has now launched its iPhone application, Pet Earth. Pet Earth is a virtual pet game where users fix disasters and catch polluters to earn trees. These trees can then be planted to maintain and grow the pet. Planting trees on Pet Earth will also plant real trees worldwide because a portion of the sales and ad revenue will be donated to the Arbor Day Foundation and Trees for the Future.

The game begins with the adoption of a loveable 6 sextillion kilogram pet with plenty of quirks. For one, disasters on Pet Earth decrease its health and need to be addressed. Each disaster is a different mini-game that requires a certain action to be taken to mitigate the damage. Once the disaster has been resolved, trees are earned based on the magnitude and the response time.

Catching polluters is also important. Track the polluters to their secret hideouts by following clues in the form of geography trivia questions. Once a polluter is captured, money will be awarded. The money can be used to purchase items from the Earth store for Pet Earth.

Planting trees make a world of difference both for Pet Earth and in real-life. One tree can absorb over 50 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, replacing it with life-giving oxygen. Trees also provide shade, block cold winds, attract birds and wildlife, prevent soil erosion, and clean our water. That’s why GoPlanit will donate a portion of sales and ad revenue to assisting the goals of the Arbor Day Foundation and Trees for the Future.

We want to do our part to plant and nurture trees for future generations. So, please support the cause by downloading the Pet Earth or Pet Earth Lite iPhone applications today.
